The line graphs presents the amount of budgets parents spending on their children’s sporting activities and the number of British children who took part in three sports from 2008 to 2014.
It is noticeable that parents invested more and more money each year in children’s sports over the six-year period. In terms of the number of children taking part, football attracted significantly more people than athletics or swimming.
In 2008, British parents spent an average of 20 pounds per month on children’s sporting activities. This figure increased gradually over the following six years, reaching over 30 pounds by 2014.
Looking at the participation numbers, in 2008 approximately 8 million British children played football, while just about 2 million children were enrolled in swimming clubs and less than 1 million practiced athletics. The number of children participation in football relatively remained unchanged over the following six years. By contrast, the respective figure for swimming doubled to nearly 4 million and there was a near fivefold increase in the number of children doing athletics.
