In the lecture, the professors holds an opinion that the information of reading is out of date and could not account for the Little Ice Age, which is opposite from what the article claims that several possible reason can explain. Compared with the points presented in the reading , the professor refutes them one by one.
Initially, the professor illustrates that ocean currents occurred in Europe and North America, but the Little Ice Age also happened in New Zealand. Therefore, ocean current cannot explain the cooling. This directly contradicts what the reading passage states the Little Ice Age is caused by disruption of ocean currents.
After that, the speaker points out that the volcanic eruptions are not strong enough to lower the temperature. Usually, the volcanic eruption send dust to the atmosphere will cause unusual phenomenon like colorful sunset, but there is no record of these. In this case, the eruption is not very strong. This also different from the reading, which indicates that volcanic eruption will increase dark cloud of dust as well as sulfur gas of atmosphere leading lower temperature.
Finally, the professor asserts that there is not enough time to cause global cooling because the trees do not have enough time to refill the fields for agriculture. This counters the reading idea that the decrease of human population cause the global temperature decreased.
