The line graph illustrates some data from a 2008 report concerning the amount of energy utilized by Americans since 1980 along with some estimates until the year 2030.
Overall, Americans are highly dependent on fossil fuels, whereas non-fossil fuels are rather insignificantly used.
Petrol and oil were the dominant energy source in the USA in 1980 at 35q and its consumption is expected to increase until 2030 to reach around 50q despite some fluctuations that occurred between 1980 and 1995. Meanwhile, coal and natural gas were less used by Americans in 1980 and they started at similar points at 15q and 20q respectively. Natural gas had a slight fall to approximately 16q at the beginning but then it rose to nearly the same starting point in 1998 and is estimated to continue at the same pace until 2030, while coal had a slight increase in 1990 and reached nearly above 20q and is projected to increase and reach around 30q in 2030.
On the other hand, all non-fossil fuels started off at the same units of consumption (around 4q). Energy consumed from nuclear and solar/wind rose by 2q each and are expected to stay steady until 2030, whereas hydropower, although increased after 1980, had fallen to where it started and is predicted to maintain the same level till 2030.
