The reading and the passage discuss a discovered fossil skeleton of a dinosaur, preserved in volcanic ash. The passage presents three critics that have opposed the idea that the dinosaur was feathered. While the lecture argues with these critics and explains why none of them are true.
First, the passage states the pattern of fine lines might be formed after death and they aren't related to feathers. However, the professor disagrees with this critic and states that it is not observed any decomposition on other animal fossils that are located in the same area. Indeed, their fossils showed beautiful preserved because of volcanic ash.
Second, the reading suggests that if the fine lines assume are remains of real structure, they might relate to frills, not to feathers. However, the professor argues with this opinion. She states there some chemical differences between feathers and frills structure in which help us to be certain that patterns are related to feathers. Indeed, contrary to feathers that contain a great deal protein called keratin, frills have no keratin. Hence, the pattern certainly is related to feathers because there is evidence that shows the presence of keratin on the mentioned fossils.
Third, the passage states two functions of feathers and claims none of them is related to the fossil because they are located on the backbone and tail. However, the lecturer refutes this classification completely. She believes there is another function which is called "display function". Therefore, she stated like a peacock that it's colorful feathers have a display function. The feathers on the dinosaur were colorful and they were for beauty.
Although the passage presents three critics that argue with the feather structure of the discovered fossils, the lecture refutes all of them by presenting her explanation.
