Recommendation letter

Being the departmental head, I feel privileged while recommending Mr. Masud, the most dedicated student I have even seen in my 30-years teaching profession. If I start telling about him, surely I must talk about our first meet at the university library; while most of the students were rushing out from the campus in the eve of winter vacation, it was Masud who was staying up late at the library among pile of books to finish not only his assignment, but also finding articles for his group mate too. I first thought finding someone at the library at an awkward time maybe a coincidence, later I got myself wrong when I found him directly as my student in the next year. Being a teacher of pharmacy, it was obvious to see the students who always showed reluctance for the code of ethics, but in this case, Masud was unique. He was always concerned with the welfare of the mass people of our country through his subject. So far I know, he came from a middle class family and maybe this is one of the prime reasons which always acted for him as a pull factor to put people first as a beneficiary of this subject knowledge. At the last year of university, when most of the students feel a bit euphoric dreaming about “profitable” job market considering the “money matters”, Masud was indifferent. He was obsessed on how patients are being wrongly treated in our country leaving the poor people in vulnerable situations both in physical as well as financial aspects. That is why, when most of my thesis students came up with the proposal of phytochemical analysis, or pharmaceutical technology, Masud proved him different by finding out the rationality and irrationality of using antibiotics in Bangladesh. I was surprised how he worked door to door with the root level patients as well as the doctors to gather large sample data of antibiotic usage in our country.

His dedication and hard-work, finally, did not go in vain. He identified that in Bangladesh antibiotics are used carelessly and to our utter astonishment, sometimes those are prescribed by the non-qualified doctors without any proven necessity, which is somehow linked with the AMR issues we are discussing currently worldwide. Even in Bangladesh, MDR cases are becoming more burning questions as there is not enough last resort to treat resistant cases, resulting in a significant financial loss to the patient party who are unfortunately not being subsidized by the government for a single penny. No doubt to contend that we always pay lip service to these critical issues, but if we had lots of like-minded Masud with the same thought process, maybe our health-sector might have seen some lights at the end of the tunnel. Despite the need of the patients are being unmet always, it never seized the opportunity to talk with him on this kind of more and more mature issues in different forums including University Research Center as well as Alumni Association where he was one of the founder members. I can remember, during his third year, when there was an outbreak of diarrhea in the outskirts of Dhaka, he raised a charitable fund for supplying ORS, free of cost to the victims which clearly depicts Masud’s sensitivity to mass people’s welfare.

However, as he left the university after graduation, we lost contact with each other and at that time communication, connectivity etc. were not like what we see today. After long years back, when Masud came to me at the university and explained his desire for higher studies that directly correlates with the economical approach in healthcare management, I was not surprised, rather I am sure that our country will be able to utilize him in the future. Moreover, I was amazed to see how the illusive corporate world job could not buy his dream of helping people. I strongly believe, if Masud gets the opportunity to learn more, he will definitely be able serve our country in the next coming days in a better way since the government itself was looking for a change maker.
