driverless cars
The reading and lecture both are about driverless cars. The reading provides an opinion that driverless cars which use sensors and computers to commute, are the ultimate solution to three specific problems; traffic accidents, pollution and time wasted due to driving. The lecturer however thinks that even if driverless cars are a new innovation, they are far from perfect and don’t really solve any major issues.
The author of the passage believes that driverless cars are the solution to traffic accidents, one of the biggest problems in America. He gives an example of one of the technological companies, who own a driverless car which went on for 700,000 miles without an accident. The lecturer contrasts this by saying that the software developed for driverless cars is just as much prone to error, because after all it is designed by humans. With regards to the example stated in the passage, the lecturer mentions that the car which travelled 700,000 miles without an accident just met with one last month and it was all over the news raising doubt about the safety provided by driverless cars.
The author claims that driverless cars would communicate with each other and thus operate better in traffic; this would improve their engine efficiency and frequency of turning the engines on and off would reduce thus resulting in reduction of pollution. He goes on to say that, driverless cars would definitely be more environment friendly. The lecturer however thinks that if driverless cars come into existence, the need for licence would be eliminated resulting in more cars on the road thus causing more pollution.
Finally the author posits that with the use of driverless cars, people would have an option of spending about 30 mins(average time required for an American to commute to his workplace) doing something else other than driving like watching videos or talking to co passengers and being relaxed. The lecturer refutes this argument by saying that driving and listening to music is the idea of relaxing for most of the people and hence, if they get extra time during the commute, they would just end up wasting it or working which they need to do for the next 7-8 hours. Lecturer says there is no requirement of this extra time because most probably people won’t be able to catch a break during this time and hence it does not solve a big problem.

Both the lecture and the…
Both the lecture and the article are about autonomous cars. In the article the author mentions the pros of self-driving cars while the lecture challenges the claims made by the author. The lecturer states the cons of self-driving cars
Firstly, the article says that self-driving vehicles drive without accidents and there was an example of a self-driving car that drove 700,000 miles without an accident. on the contrary the lecture states that the news were mentioning everywhere that the same car hit another car last month which completely contradicts what the article comforted the people of the things that will not happen
Secondly, the passage states that the pollution will reduce because there will be less traffic because the engines will stop less often and therefore the car would not need to keep using the fuel. But the lecture argues that because driving would not need the driver to have a driver's license anymore there will be more people in cars from all ages thus an increase in the pollution
Thirdly the author mentions that being in the car without driving will help save time to do different things on the other hand the lecture mentions that some people use driving as a way to relax and have fun so without driving the car would be another workspace or a place to waste your time .
