You are a student at an English language school in Brighton and are living in private accommodation with other flatmates. You’ve not had hot water or heating for some time. The landlord’s workmen have tried to fix the problem but without success.
Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter state your reason for writing, describe the problems and explain how you feel, propose a solution, and risk the landlord to take action.”
Dear Mr Thompson,
My name is Alex and I have been living in one of your properties located on Fairview Road from last 7 months. I am writing with regard to the malfunctioned heating and geyser system in my flat which is becoming a huge inconvenience for me as well as for other housemates too.
We all flatmates are experiencing two main problems. Firstly, the heating system trips down in the middle of the night that leaves us freezing in this cold winter. Initially, it did not happen often, but now it happens most of the time. Secondly, the geyser of the shared bathroom has stopped working unexpectedly once again which is creating a lot of trouble for all the flatmates, especially in the morning when we have to take a shower.
I appreciate that you have sent a mechanic in the past, however, the problem still persists. One of the flatmates is a mechanical engineer and after meticulous examination, he found out that the thermostat of the heating system is not working properly whereas in case of the geyser its heating coil is rusted. I would request you to please replace those parts.
Even though we love this place for its serenity, but if you would not fix these problems we might consider moving out as it is almost impossible to bear the cold weather which is about to come in the Christmas season. None of us wants to risk our health.
We await your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Alex Barns
