According to the reading passage, three reasons mentioned to approve that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline, while in the listening section, lecturer argued that those reasons are not convincing, and he stated other competing theories to contradict the information in the passage.
In the reading passage, at first, author claimed that the increased use of ethanol fuel would not help to solve global warming, which is one of the biggest environmental problems, because ethanol also release carbon dioxide. Second, production of significant amounts of ethanol would reduce the amounts of plants that feed farm animals. Finally, ethanol fuel will never be able to compete with gasoline on price, because United States government help in the form of tax subsides to ethanol producers.
However, in the lecture, speaker pointed out that although ethanol fuel is a good alternative, but reasons, which mentioned in the passage, are not convincing. Also he stated three controversial theories. First, ethanol fuel will not add to global warming, because it is made by plants. In other words, because growing plants absorb carbon dioxide, it removes carbon dioxide from atmosphere. Second, scientist using cellulose to provide ethanol fuel from plants, which parts of plants that are not eaten by farm animals, so it does not reduce the food of animal. Finally, ethanol fuel will compete with gasoline on price, because if amounts of providing ethanol by producers increase, ethanol's price will drop as more of it become available, and it's price drops about forty percent.
