The graph below shows the consumption of 3 spreads from 19821 to 2007.
The graph illustrates the use of three different spreads(margarine, low fat and reduced spreads and butter) over the time period of 1981 to 2007. Units are measured in grams.
Overall, both margarine and butter consumption reduced from 1981 to 2007 whereas low fat and reduced spreads were consumed more in 2007 as compared to 1996. A notable fall in the consumption of butter can be seen over given period. While the consumption of butter was highest in 1981, in 2007 low fat and reduced spreads were the most consumed spreads.
In terms of low fat and reduced spreads, they were not consumed till 1996, however, during the period of 1996 to 2001 their consumption increased from 10 grams to a peak of above 80 grams followed by a fall to about 70 grams in 2007.
Interestingly, butter consumption was above 140 grams which rose over the course of another 5 years to about 160 grams at its peak followed by a significant decrease till 2007 to only 50 grams. On the other hand, the use of margarine remained between 80 to 100 grams from 1981 to 2001 later falling to 40 grams in 2007.
