TPO 55
The reading and the lecture are both about the problems of using a device for fighting desertification. The author provides three possible problems with using the devices. The lecturer, however, finds them dubious and casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the reading passage.
According to the reading, each devise cost is 25 US Dollars that is a really expensive way of preventing desertification. Conversely, this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that after trees grow enough they can remove the device and use it for a new young tree. Additionally, she points out that the devices are reusable and when considering the number of trees that can be grown by one device, the cost is not high.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that fighting with desertification needs local people to help to install and maintain devices. On the other hand, the lecturer asserts that the device helps the local people in producing more food. She goes on to say that after trees grow enough people can use their branches as fire-wood in winter.
Finally, the author posits that the ability of the device to collect and conserve water for trees is limited. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that most of the trees can survive after grown their roots without the device's help. She notes that trees have long roots that they can reach deep inside the soils and can use profound underground water.
