The following table illustrates what share of various classes of Australian families lived in poverty in 1999.
As can be clearly observed from the table, six distinctive households were surveyed. 21% of Australian families who were classified as sole parent lived in poverty (232000 households). Followed by 19% of single families without children and 12% of couples with children. The exact numbers are 359000 and 933000, respectively.
In addition, couple families who have children consisted 7% which is equivalent to 211000 households, just one per cent more than single aged person households with 6% (54000). Eventually, aged couples were placed in the last position with 4% and 48000 families.
Overall, it is clear from the table that among all households of Australia, 11% lived in poverty in 1999, while the total number of poor families reached 1837000 in same year. Unlike aged couples, sole parents were the biggest proportion who suffered poverty. Other categories were placed between aged couples and sole parents.
