The line graph depicts the number of hours people spent on different social media platforms every day from 2010 till 2016 whereas the pie chart shows the reasons for which they were used.
Overall, it’s clear from the line chart that the use of Snapchat, Instagram and Linkedin has increased over the time period, while Facebook saw a decline in it use. The pie chart make it obvious that the main reason people used social media was to communicate and the least common reason was to watch videos.
The Snapchat appears to be the most popular platform as its daily usage in 2010 was 5 hours which increased further to about 6 hours by 2016. The Instagram saw a significant fluctuation in its usage but ultimately it reached almost 5 hours per day in 2016, which is a 2 folds increase from 2010 levels. The Facebook, after increasing in popularity till 2014, saw a sharp decline afterwards to about 4 hours per day.
The main reason behind social media use was communication, which accounts for 58% of total use. The second most common reason to hop on social media applications was shopping at 23% while games and videos collectively accounted for less than 20% of total utility.
