Coal consumption by sectors in the UK (in million tonnes)
The tables give information about the amount of coal which was used by different sectors in the UK from 1975 to 2000.
Overall, it can clearly be seen that the consumption of coal by all sectors decreased significantly, while power stations using coal which increased in the first period of five years, started in 1975. However, power stations was still the sector which consumed more coal than other sectors. In the total, the usage of coal by sectors in the UK experienced a dramatic decline over the time period shown.
Looking at the coal used for Power stations, it started at 77.2 million tones, before reaching a peak of 89.6 million in 1980. This figured then dropped to 84.0 million in 1985 and then continued going down to 59.6 million in 1990. After five years, the consumption of coal by power stations stood at 54.9 million. From 1995 until the end of the period, it experienced a significant drop to 47.1 million.
Turning to the domestic, this sector used 20.2 million tons of coal in 1975. Then, during the period of 15 years, it sharply fell to 2.7 million. Subsequently, this figure remained relatively stable at 2.7 million from 1990 to 1995. In 2000, the use of coal by domestic was less than the previous 0.1 million. The amount of coal which was consumed by industry stood at 19.6 million in 1975. After that, it decreased gradually from 7.9 million in 1980 to 3.2 in 2000. The use of coal by services was similar to industry consumption coal. There was a decline from 4.2 million in 1975 to 0.6 million in 1995. From 1995 to 2000, this figure remained unchanged.
In the total, the coal consumption of these sectors fell remarkably until the year 2000.
