The chart below gives information about the age of women in Australia when they gave birth to their first child in 1966, 1986 and 2006.
The bar chart describes the percentage of Australian women who had their first child in terms of their age ranges between 1966 and 2006.
Overall, the rate of women aged under 24 having their first child was on the decrease, while the opposite was true for that of women aged from 30 to 39 in Australia. Also, the female aged over 40 tended to give no more birth during the period.
In 1966, the highest birth rate was recorded in 19-to-24-year-old women, over 60%, which was almost double that of the female under 19 years old. Over the next 40 years, birth rates of the former and the latter age ranges experienced an overly twofold drop to bottom out at about 28% and 12%, respectively, in 2006.
By contrast, the equivalent figures for 30-34 and 34-39 year olds increased after standing at around 13% and 8% in turn in 1966 and peaked at roughly 45% and 30% in order in 2006. Meanwhile, 36% of 25-to-30-year-old women had their first baby in 1966 and the birth rate of those rose to peak at 50% in 1986 before dropping. However, that of women aged over 40 was negligible throughout the period.
