The charts below show the proportion of people’s spending on different commodities and services in a particular European country in 1958 and 2008
The pie charts compare the expenditure on a variety of goods and services percentagewise recorded in a European country during 50 years, starting in 1958.
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of money spent on food was dominant in 1958; nonetheless, 50 years later, Housing became the biggest contribution of the expenditure on commodities and services. Meanwhile, the lowest segment in 1958 was made up by the expenditure on Luxury goods; however, in the year 2008, Entertainment became the least sector that people poured money into.
With regard to Housing, Luxury goods and Travel/ transport, they all underwent an increasing trend. At the beginning of the period, the housing sector accounted for 22%, which ranked top in 1958; nevertheless, It slightly rose to 32 % in 2008. The figure for Luxury goods and Travel/ transport went up exponentially over 50 years from 7 % and 8 % respectively, eventually reaching double what they were at the start of the period.
As opposed to the aforementioned trend, Clothing, Entertainment and Food recorded a reverse pattern of decreasing between 1958 and 2008. It is evident that the percentage for clothing reduced modestly from 18 % to 16 %. As was represented, between 1958 and 2008 usage of clothing and entertainment halved from 18 % and 13% to 12% and 6 % respectively, which was the two smallest segments of the pie chart shown in 2008.
