Essay topics:

Going green is when individuals and companies put in effort to reduce their impact on the environment. The goal is to reduce their carbon footprints, mainly by increasing the use of recyclable products and decreasing their waste production. Going green has many benefits, not only for the earth but for individuals as well.

First, going green is highly beneficial for the environment. It can reduce environmental pollution by reducing the amount of waste. Since the industrial revolution, pollution has gotten worse to the point where it is causing irreversible damage to the environment. Going green can reduce this damage by slowing down the production of waste and giving nature time to recover.

Second, it can lead to an increase in profits for companies. According to a report on global sustainability published by the market research firm Nielsen, 45% of consumers are influenced by the image of a company. Moreover, they are more driven to buy the product if the company has an eco-friendly image. Going green allows the company to earn the trust of customers, ultimately increasing their sales by saving the environment.

Third, going green allows people to save money. Going green can reduce the cost of resources used in everyday life, such as energy, for both individuals and companies. For example, the installation of solar panels can reduce the money spent on electricity in the long run, especially when the cost of such resources is increasing day by day. Thus, going green saves the environment and money at the same time.

The reading passage claims that going green has many benefits, not only for the earth but for individuals as well, and provides several evidences that seem to uphold the claim. However, the lecture mentions that there are a few points that need to be considered before going green and refutes the point made in the reading passage. The reasons used in the lecture will be elaborated in more detail below.
First of all, the lecture disapproves the point made in the reading passage, which claims that going green is extremely beneficial for the environment, by commenting that while this may be true, it actually wouldn't have much effect to the environment in a realistic sense. Damaged environment is not achieved by small amount of humans and companies. It is actually a consequence done by immense number of humans and companies for a very long time. Having all the people worldwide going green wouldn't reverse the effects that have already been made.
Second, while the reading passage contends that going green would lead to an increase in profits for companies, the lecture counterpoints the claim by commenting that the cost of eco-friendly products are expensive and will have the customers turn to products that are cheap. To prove this point, the lecture mentions coffees with paper straw as an example. People would rather choose to purchase cheap coffees with plastic straws instead of costly coffees with paper straws. This will be a huge disadvantage for the company.
Last but not least, the reading passage asserts that going green would allow people to save money. However, the lecture refutes this point by claiming that the initial cost of going green is very expensive. The cost for installing and maintaining the solar panels for individuals is very costly. The same goes for companies because the initial electricity usage will also increase.
