What are the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning?
Nowadays, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world is witnessing a rapid digital transformation more than ever. Correspondingly, distance learning has been applied to most countries or areas in all levels of education to make sure that students can learn virtually while being safe at home. However, everything has its strengths and limitations, so does distance learning.
On the one hand, apart from preventing students from being infected by COVID-19 viruses, distance learning can help them to save some additional costs. Specifically, since students do not have to attend lectures in classes or at campuses, they neither pay for transportation or accommodation costs. Moreover, distance learning means students can attend more courses in other countries without paying extra tuition fees if they have connections with other schools overseas. Additionally, students can be more active and flexible as they can study anywhere, like at home, in the library, in a study cafe. This also reduces some stress for students because there is no need to worry about traffic jams or other external factors that can make them late.
On the other hand, as students cannot have face-to-face interactions with their professors, distance learning may restrict effective communication, leading to students not understanding the lecture clearly and absorbing knowledge entirely. Besides, it requires a quite high level of self-discipline because students can get distracted easily by social media or their families. Furthermore, despite the development of society and the internet, many areas can still not connect to that worldwide network. Plus, many families cannot afford an electronic device to access the internet, making distance learning impossible for many students. Last but not least, students may lose their chances to experience student life due to the lack of opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, providing a number of soft skills and connections, which are extremely important for students to manage their life later on.
In conclusion, distance-learning may have both pros and cons; therefore, understanding those sides will help institutes and students create strategies for more effective delivery of the lectures, ensuring an uninterrupted learning journey.
