colonization on asteroids
The reading and the passage are both about the excellence and advantages of colonization on asteroids instead of moon or Mars. Actually, the author provides three advantages regarding asteroid colonization. On the other hand, the professor is not convinced of this and casts doubt on each of the theories presented in the reading. Point the other side of the story, the speaker is of the opinion that living on asteroids is not as possible as mentioned in the passage and each of the theories has downsides.
To begin with, the author asserts that landing on asteroids is safer and much easier since it has low gravity. The article mentions that owing to this lower gravity, space crafts are capable of carrying less fuel for the trip. This specific argument is challenged by the professor. Contrastly, the speaker argues that this low gravity provides risks for the astronauts. According to him, low gravity give rise to several health problems such as decreasing muscles’ mass and bone density.
Secondly, the article disputes that some of the asteroids are rich in precious metal and stones and mining these elements that are scares on earth is profitable. On the other hand, the professor opposes this notion by claiming that other prohibiting factors should be considered regarding mining these elements. First of all, the speaker alludes to the cost of supporting such colonies and transporting tools to asteroid or transporting goods to Earth which are expensive processes. Additionally, the speaker states that providing large amount of these elements on Earth increases the available supply which, relatively, lead to not achieving the market goals.
Finally, the writer disputes that some of the asteroids are close to the Earth which make it easier to get to them. Also, the article states that such trips will take less time and are, consequently, more affordable. In contrast, the professor’s stance is that although some of the asteroids are closer to Earth, however, since their orbits may be unusual, they can go away from Earth for great distances after a while. Therefore, hardly space crafts can return to Earth if the asteroid go too far from Earth, even more than Mars.
