decreasing salinity of the lake
The reading and the lecture are both about the possibility of controlling the salinity of the Salton Sea lake. Actually, the author provides three solutions in order to reduce the salinity level of the lake and save the fish and birds lives. On the other hand, the professor is not convinced of the solutions presented in the reading. Point to the other side of the story, the speaker is of the opinion that these approaches are not feasible and present drawbacks.
To begin, the author argues that it is possible to remove some of the salt by desalination. To be more specific, water is heated and then evaporated in this process. Later, the solid material will remains and be removed from water. This specific argument is challenged by the lecture. According to the speaker, this solid material that has been remained includes poisonous chemical components such as Selenium other than salt which is toxic for human. Furthermore, she asserts that if this component penetrates the air and be inhaled by human, it will poison them.
Secondly, the writer disputes that the pacific ocean, which contains less salt, can be moved and added to the lake's water and help reducing the lake's salinity. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes this notion by asserting that although this method will decrease the salinity, however, bringing ocean water to fill the lake requires constructing canals and pipelines as mentioned in the passage. Since the shoreline is very long, the government does not have enough budget in order to construct such an expensive facilities in long distances.
Finally, the the writer averts that controlling the salinity is, also, possible by constructing walls to separate different parts of the lake. To delineate, salinity can be decreased in vaster parts by adding nearby stream water. Contrastly, the professor's stance is that this solution, in spite of being feasible, will not be practical for a prolonged time. Additionally, the lecturer states that geological hazards such as sever earthquakes damages the walls and the refined water will mix back into salty water. Therefore, hardly is this solution practical for a long span of time.
