The first chart illustrates the number of hours spent by 15 year old adolescent on homework in various countries in 2015. The second bar chart highlights the top countries with scores recorded in science measured against international standard by the same age group in the same year.
Overall, it appears to have a correlation between countries where children spent little time doing their homework and higher science score.
Among the top countries which spent time on doing homework, Finland spent the least time by 2.8 hours while South Korea and Japanese students averaged 2.9 and 4.3 hours respectively. The average time in rest of the countries fall between five to seven hours, while Italy spent the longest time (8.6 hours) doing assignments, over four times longer than Finland.
With respect to science score, teenagers in Finland scored the highest with mean score of 568, despite spending the least amount of time doing their homework. Aside from Hong kong-china which recorded 543, adolescents in the next six nations averaged to 530 points. The lowest score was recorded by Netherland and USA with 518 and 516 points. Interestingly, Italy did not qualified to be within the top ten countries.
