corn ethanol should replace fossil fuel gas as the primary source for running cars.
The article introduces the topic of ethanol, which is a renewable fuel made from crops, mainly corn. The writer says that corn ethanol should replace fossil fuel gas as the primary source for running cars. However, the professor explains that that replacing gasoline by corn-based ethanol is not a viable option and attacks the claims made in the reading.
First, the author says that a lower amount of energy would be consumed by ethanol when compared to gasoline. This would be correlated to higher gas milege in fuel efficient cars and less frequent gas stops, which results in lower prices. The professor refutes this point by saying that ethanol wouldn’t save on energy, even though corn uses a lower energy than gasoline. She states that a large amount of energy is required to create corn; that is to plant, harvest, transport, convert and distribute it. It might even be possible that the price of ethanol is greater than gasoline. To add to the this, she states that the price of corn would be sky-rocketting in not time due to an increased demand of the crop. This would not only impact the direct consumers of corn, but also farmers in the beef and dairy industry, where the primary source of food for cows is corn. Such a change would adversely impact the economy.
Secondly, the author posists that a switch to ethanol would be environmental friendly and result in lower carbon and greenhouse emissions from earth, thereby reducing the crying impact of global warming. However, the professor belienves that there are flaws in the author’s position and says that such a move might not help the environment, but rather damage it further. According to the professor, an increased demand for corn would be provided by increasing the farm land allocated to grow corn crops. This additional piece of land would absorb more carbon, resulting in additional carbon-dioxide emissions, which thereby perishes the ozone layer.
As you can see, the author and lecturer hold very different views on corn-based ethanol replacing fossil fuel gas as aprimary source for running cars.
