The graph shows the value in US dollars (in millions of dollars) of investment in funds of four categories from 1988 to 2014.
The line graph demonstrates the value of US dollars invested in funds of four financial assets, including gold, company shares, fine art and property, in the 26-year period, from 1988 to 2014.
Overall, the investment funds of all four categories experienced substantial increase in the period of 16 years. Noticeably, gold was always the most prominent investment fund among the others from 2006 to 2014, and it also underwent the most dramatic upward trend.
Firstly, according to the chart, the investment in both gold and company shares witnessed noticeable growth all over the period. In 1988, about 50 million dollars was consumed in company shares, while gold was twice as much as that of company shares, at 100 million. After drastic fluctuation in the 10-year period, from 1988 to 1998, the investment in gold rose dramatically to peak at 450 million in 2012. Meanwhile, the amount of money used in company shares varied sharply in the first five years, then climbing considerably to hit the highest point of 250 million in 2014.
Otherwise, there were fluctuations in the investments in fine art and property. In 1994, the amount of money invested in fine art was at the same point as the figure for property, at over 50 million dollars. In the following years, remarkable variations were seen in the money used in fine art before reaching a peak of nearly 350 million in 2014, which far exceeded that of property in the same year, at just under 200 million dollars.
