Essay topics:

The graph shows the value in US dollars (in millions of dollars) of investment in funds of four categories from 1988 to 2014.

The graph illustrates changes in the amount of money invested in four categories in the US, namely company shares, fine art, gold, and property between 1988 and 2014.

In general, it is apparent that there was a sharp increase in investment across the board during the examined period. It is notable that the gap between gold and other materials was fairly considerably widened by 2014.

Looking at the figure, the US government invested a great deal of money in both gold and fine art in 1988, standing at roughly 100 million dollars. However, this figure for gold underwent a significant decrease by half in the next four years before growing dramatically by 1996. After that, there was a continual decline in the investment of gold, and then witnessed a drastic rocket to reach a peak at 450 million dollars in 2012 before plummeting to nearly 375 million dollars in the final year. Meanwhile, despite starting at the same figure as gold, the figure for fine art experienced a considerable fluctuation throughout the period from 1996 to 2006 after maintaining a stable growth for 8 years. In 2006, the investment of fine art was starting to recover rapidly rising up to approximately 350 million dollars in 2014.

In regard to the two remaining categories, the US authority allocated a halve of the budget compared to both gold and fine art in 1988. Nonetheless, investment in two categories witnessed negligible growth until 1994. The money allocated for company shares then doubled in 1996 and rose gradually to 250 million dollars in 2014, while property recorded a substantial increase in funds from 2006 onwards, reaching around 150 million dollars by 2014.
