WRITE A SURVEY REPORT ON STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF ONLINE LEARNING IN ONE SPECIFIC SUBJECT/COURSE.
Introduction
Based on the stress and difficulty to control the epidemic situation, online learning for students has been applied to ensure the progress of the program. This survey aims to find out students' perceptions of online learning, specifically in a speaking skills course.
Method
The research was done by creating a survey and sending it to a part of foreign language students via email to complete. Everyone gave different opinions on the questions and suggested some new ideas for the course.
Findings
Figure 1
According to the progress of the program, most of the students of the foreign language department have taken a speaking course. We have received a student satisfaction rating when taking an online speaking course, this is shown in Figure 1. 72% of students have a high level of satisfaction but also 16% of students. low satisfaction level option. The remaining 12% is for the average level. There are many reasons leading to such survey results such as dislike of talking, unstable network connection, and hate screen exchange.
Figure 2
50 students were asked about the difficulties that students had when participating in the online class on Speaking skills at home during the pandemic. Figure 2 shows that many students feel unable to keep up with the speed of teaching and the amount of knowledge imparted by the lecturer. This reason is the most chosen, accounting for 53%. Besides, there are also 15 students (30%) having difficulty doing homework. The poor awareness of some students makes group work uncoordinated and ineffective, this accounts for 17%.
Figure 3
In addition, the survey asked for opinions: the interaction between lecturers and students in online courses is better than offline. More than half (52%) disagree with this view because face-to-face interactions are better. 41% of students agree with this view and 7% do not respond to this question.
Figure 4
Figure 4 assesses student satisfaction with learning materials. Students taking the course are provided with the same curriculum and different materials depending on the instructor. 81% of the participants felt extremely satisfied in this regard. Only 5% of the evaluations were not satisfied and 14% of the students chose to be quite satisfied. We will have some adjustments in the future to suit everyone.
Figure 5
Finally, students are invited to come up with some ideas to contribute to improving the online speaking course. We have four ideas mentioned, where 40% of students suggested having speaking practice at home through video recording or dialogue. The next most received opinion (31%) was to prevent students from using scripts during presentations, discussions, and rehearsals. 19% recommend encouraging people to interact more during the learning process. The remaining 10% is for the idea of creating games, games that inspire learning. The ideas students give are very interesting and will be applied in the future.
Conclusion
Thus, the online speaking skills course as well as other subjects introduced during the epidemic period has helped students to both acquire knowledge and protect their health. Most students prefer online learning to offline learning, but it is undeniable that online learning is not highly effective. Our survey is in one course but it also makes it possible for us to evaluate other courses. And in the future, we will continue to expand and have more interesting surveys.
