The graph below shows the average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
The line graph compares how much carbon dioxide was released per person in 4 different countries from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, there was a general increase in the amount of carbon dioxide released in Italy and Portugal, while the opposite trend was seen in the figure for the United Kingdom and Sweden. In addition, the emission rate in the United Kingdom was consistently highest during the years examined though it experienced a gradual decrease.
Over 8 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions were released per person in 1967, with a subsequent increase to just over 10 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions, and a final drop to shy of 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide at the end of the period (2007). By contrast, the figure for emissions in Italy started at the north of 4 tonnes, after which it experienced a slight growth to just over 6 metric tonnes in 1977, before ending the period at its peak (around 8 tonnes of co2 emission).
The amount of Co2 emission in the United Kingdom was at roughly 11 tonnes in 1967, followed by a fluctuation of around 11 tonnes released per person, before reaching its low of nearly 9 tonnes of co2 emission in 2007. The figure for emissions in Portugal saw an opposite change, growing annually from the start of the period, reaching the peak of just under 6 tonnes of carbon dioxide at the end of the period
