With the pressures on today’s young people to succeed academically, some people believe that non-academic subjects at school (eg: physical education and cookery) should be removed from the syllabus so that children can concentrate wholly on academic subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is a widely held belief that non-academic subjects such as physical education and cookery should be eliminated from schools' curricula to assist students in achieving academic success. However, I strongly oppose this view because these subjects offer considerable benefits to the students.
Primarily, non-academic courses provide essential advantages that guarantee students' physical well-being. For instance, many learners experience lower back pain and poor posture as a result of sitting for long hours under unhealthy conditions during classes. To counteract this issue, encouraging students to participate in practical-based subjects like physical education can enhance their body movements and relieve muscle stiffness, thus improving their overall health condition. As evidence supporting this argument, researchers at the University of Leeds conducted a study confirming that promoting physical exercise among young individuals reduced the likelihood of developing low back issues or spinal disorders.
Furthermore, extra-curricular disciplines can benefit students by providing much-needed respite from academic stressors such as exams and deadlines. The pressure of maintaining good grades sometimes overwhelms learners resulting in mental fatigue or breakdowns. Non-academic subjects like arts and sports act as an excellent outlet for stress relief when managed appropriately. Students have reported feeling more relaxed and refreshed after participating in creative activities or engaging in outdoor sports. According to studies carried out by Beijing Normal University educators, non-academic syllabus observance has seen a 10% reduction rate of Academic Burnout amongst pupils.
In conclusion, while some proponents may think removing non-academic coursework from school programs could enhance academic achievement rates, I feel it would adversely affect student's growth holistically by limiting opportunities beyond exam scores alone; therefore disagree with this perspective wholeheartedly.
