Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Why is this the case? Do you think this is a positive or a negative development? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples
We are living in a technology-driven world where smartphones have become AN indispensable part of our life. This is the reason why there has been a significant increase in the amount of time children spend on their phones. While some people may argue that this is a natural result of the conviniences these devices afford, i firmly believe that this phenomenon is creating detrimental health outcomes for children.
One of the major for the high smartphones usage among children is that parents view it as a great solution. Nowadays, many parents find themselves overwhemled and exhausted after a hard working day, and smartphones is one of the easiest methods to keep their children occupied. It is a common occurence to see children keep their eyes glued to their screen at restaurants, airpots or coffee shops, while their parents attend to other matters. Another reason for children’s excessive use of smartphones is the availability of entertainment options. Children can easily donwload games, music, movies on their phones and then spending several hours to playing, listening or watching. This can be highly negative because it will take away the time that children should spend on other activities such as doing homework, playing sports, socializing with friends.
Considering the effects of this trend, we can say that it is a negative development. First of all, the overuse of smartphones greatly impairs children mental and physical health. Children spending hours on smartphones daily are more likely to experienced anxiety, depression and loneliness. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, can contribute to this by exposing children to cyberbullying comments. Futhermore, the blue light emitted by the screens can harm children’s eyesight, which is pảticularly damaging to developing eyes, can lead to sedentary lifestyle, which has long-term consequences for physicsl fitnss.
In conclusion, the current phenomenon of children spending long hours scrolling their smartphones is extremely concerning. Even if there were any possible benefits, they would be far outweighed by the negative impacts these devices have on children’s physical and mental growth. Therefore, parents and educators need to take more active role in regulating children’s smartphone use to promote healthier lifestyle and ensure the weLL-being of the next generation.
