Young people learn more about good behavior from books or films/movies than they learn from real-life experiences.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The assertion of derive appropriate behaviors from books or films instead of practical experiences has raised a debate among individuals. From my perspective, I totally disagree with this statement on the account of deeper experiential learning and active knowledge absorption provided by real-life experiences.
To begin with, the more hands-on situations youngsters have to face, the deeper experiential learning is. As a matter of fact, young people can gain valuable lessons and insights into social behaviors through direct interpersonal interaction rather than observation. For example, it is trusted adults such as parents and teachers that have significant influences on young people by giving immediate feed-back and consequences of wrongdoings. Therefore, not only does learning from mistakes greatly improve children’s empathy, emotional intelligence but it can also foster the development of social skills.
Another contributing factor is that hands-on experiences can facilitate the process of actively acquiring knowledge. Compared to books and movies which are likely to offer abstract messages or passive observation, real-life situations require problem-solving, decision-making, and reflection, all these factors can deepen the process of learning due to profound and long-lasting effects. By active engagement, young people can internalize the moral values and gradually transform these actions into habitual moral behaviors. Take students frequently participating in charitable activities as a typical example. They reinforce their good attitudes and behaviors through repeated actions rather than solely learning the values and benefits of charity which are displayed on books or movies.
Undeniably, a variety of books and movies depict the role models and convey meaningful messages to readers and viewers. However, such resources may be somehow disconnected from real life. There exists books and movies which do not strike a balance between final moral message and drama, so they may reflect much violence, rebellion, selfishness, and conflicts. As a consequence, should youngsters not receive proper guidance, they may struggle to interpret the meaningful and constructive lessons from books or films.
In conclusion, real-life experiences play an integral part in youngsters’ learning process. Therefore, it seems to me that parents or teachers should offers children such kind of experience to ensure authentic exposure for them.
