Choose a significant historical event in the last 100 years and explain why, in your opinion, it was important. The event can be the development of an idea, discovery or invention, a moment that expressed a change in society, or natural event. It may be national or global, and either a single moment or an event which took place over a period of time.

The electricity invention was a breakthrough which transformed the way in which billions of people across the world work, learn and communicate. It was the first and perhaps the greatest of humanity’s step towards a life-enhancing technology.

First, electricity is an inexpensive and friendly-environment and renewable source of energy. Fuels like coal, petroleum and ethanol are non-renewable sources of energy. Once depleted, it will take millions of years for these to be replenished. However, electricity can be produced from renewable sources like water. Thus, electricity is considered to be a renewable source of energy and thus does not harm nature in any way. The use of fuels like coal, oil and petroleum releases a lot of gases in the atmosphere. These are quite harmful both to the environment and the living beings. Using electricity as a source of energy does not release any kind of greenhouse gases in the environment. Moreover, when compared to other fuels like ethanol and methanol, electricity is more cost effective and affordable.

Second, electricity generates tremendous benefits for economics and social.
Electricity has had far-reaching effects on agriculture. It has contributed to produce labour-saving appliances include tractors, trucks, countless types of farm implements, aeroplanes and helicopters, and other vehicles. Precision agriculture even uses automatic irrigation systems, computers with satellite imagery and satellite navigation (GPS guidance) to increase yields. Besides improving production efficiency, mechanization encourages large-scale production and improve the quality of farm produce. A typical example of this is that a US farm company, installed camera systems on each greenhouse to keep track of crop status. The technology applied to farming has led to a huge reduction of agriculture workforce. Instead of hiring 8000 staffs to check as earlier, this technology will quickly find insect infestations or diseases and provide information on when the tomatoes are ready for harvest. Therefore, it can boost the revenue of the company from 2 percent to 4 percent. Moreover, as farmland acreage narrows, underground farm models open up a new era in agriculture. As far as I know, a subterranean farm called Growing Underground which in London have used special low-energy LED bulbs in multiple intensities. In the light of artificial lights and special planting technology, vegetables have grown extremely well and are becoming a major source of supply for restaurants in the city. This type of vegetable model can cope with population pressure, widen global urbanization, and also helps create jobs, reduces transportation costs, reduces pollution and is an opportunity to develop the technology.
The energy of electricity is known as the driving force of an extensive range of industries. It plays a crucial role in operating most devices. Sweated labour is superseded by machine. The factory has been fully mechanized enabling it to produce more efficiently. Electricity has given birth to the assembly line, which means everything is produced by machines precisely and constantly. Therefore, people can easily overcome the difficulty of dealing with a heavy workload with machines which have been set up. You can not deny the fact that electricity's advent helped to accelerate in industrial productivity on scales never seen before and brought about a greater volume and variety of factory-produced goods and raised the standard of living for many people. Had it not been for the firm foundation of electricity, the industry could have never been achieved.
Electricity is essential for daily transportation. Only with the advent of electricity people can install speed cameras and create the traffic light which is a great contribution to the safety of people on the street and alleviates traffic problem. Moreover, electricity is an important appearance for electric vehicles invention. Trains don't need to carry their own fuel and fuel is supplied through the overhead cables. Thus, this means the electric trains are lighter than diesel trains. According to railway-technology.com, electric trains are more environmentally friendly too, emitting between 20% - 30% less carbon monoxide than their diesel counterparts. You can even calculate the amount of carbon you'll be saving with one train company here. Figures published by the Telegraph in 2009 say that electric trains cost 20p less than diesel trains, per mile, to maintain. For the passengers, there are also benefits, with Network Rail saying the journeys in electric trains will be 'faster and quieter journeys with more seats on trains and improved reliability on some of the busiest routes'. Likewise, the electric car market is growing rapidly in the world. With diesel and petrol coming under pressure - not just from demand, but also from governments looking to reduce harmful emissions - electric cars are increasingly looking to the future of motoring. Electricity has brought a smoke-free journey transport to help protect the environment.
Electricity has blown a new wind for media and entertainment. All programs are dependent on electricity. Television allows people to update information around the world and grasp the economic, political and weather conditions that serve the needs of life. More significantly, electricity creates a much more attractive world where we can experience 3d films, comedy. In contrast to print media, the electronic media are growing in popularity, especially among the youth. In terms of social life, electricity enables people to join social networking sites, such as Facebook, Instagram or chat rooms, or to maintain contact through Skype to build strong relationships.
The electricity has made outstanding contributions to medical science. Cancer, leprosy, and many other fatal diseases are cured by a painless electrical contact. X-rays and electrocution are used in diagnosis and emergency. Electricity has proven effective for modern treatment of many diseases in surgery. Hundreds of patients are undergoing surgical operations which are impossible without electricity.

Electricity is a boon of science to modern society. Our life will slip back to primitive age without electricity. Electricity is one of the core inventions which has driven the growth.
