Describe some of your experiences in food courts and hawker centres. How important are these places in your life as a teenager in Singapore?
Hawker centres and food courts are unique to Singapore’s cultural identity. People from all walks of life gather there for affordable meals and many grow up having at least one hawker centre in their neighbourhoods. The hawker centres and food courts are very inviting to eat at as they offer a wide range of cuisines not limiting to Chinese, Indian, Malay, Thai or even Japanese food options. Majority of Singaporeans grow up settling almost all their three meals a day at the hawker centres or food courts. Thus, such eating places hold a special place in our lives.
My favourite of these eateries is situated at the hawker centre within a stone’s throw from my house, having the opportunity to dine there for breakfast, lunch and dinner on separate occasions. I grew up eating an assortment of cuisines that tempts the famished, satisfies the gourmand and fulfils the needs of time-pressed workaholics. Though the food may not be as visually appealing as those in fine-dining restaurants, the tantalizing smell of the food is what gets me going back frequently for such delicious meals.
Every weekend, my family enjoys eating dinner at the food court near my house. It is air-conditioned and relatively clean. If more family members are coming, reservation is possible at the food court as they run out of tables easily when it is peak hour. Upon entering the food court, I can always take in the atmosphere which is a delightful experience especially when one grows up frequently visiting the food court to satisfy one’s hunger. The sizzling sound from a nearby stall and endless chatter from nearby tables make me appreciate the fact that Singapore has such unique food culture. This improves social cohesion among different races, preserving our cultural identity.
Living in a diverse country, I am blessed to be able to taste a wide range of cuisines and dishes. Food courts and hawker centres are home to a variety of ethnicity and culture, making its presence unique in Singapore. I enjoying buying their mix vegetable rice as I am reminded of my grandmother’s home cooked food which are nice and piping hot. She used to prepare dinner for me every Friday night when she was still mobile, and the dishes she cooked are very similar to those sold at such outlets. Singaporeans will also know that if one buys mix vegetable rice, which is a popular food item, one should go during peak hours when they just cooked the food and it is nice and warm. If one goes too late or too early, there may be very little variety or very little food left and the dishes may be cold. If one is a regular customer like me, hawkers usually will definitely recognise you and exchange pleasant greetings. As compared to food courts where store holders are not as friendly as many different big groups of people come to buy food.
Therefore, my experiences in food courts and hawker centres across from my house offer so much more than food to me, at an affordable price. They remind me about my childhood and make me appreciate different types of food. Apart from pampering my taste buds, they remind me of the good times spent with family and friends. They supply food for the nourishment of our teenage souls. Hence, we should spend some time to appreciate the vibrant food culture that Singapore has to offer.
