Some people like to stand out from the crowd; others just want to be part of it. Which do you prefer and why?
“Why to fit in when you can stand out!” said Dr. Seuss. In my opinion, standing out when helping others is more fulfilling as compared to blending in being a bystander. In society, people who yearn to make a difference and stand up for what is right are often praised for their bravery in contrast to those who are passive.
There are many headstrong individuals such as Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai. From a young age, these individuals stood up for their beliefs and even made sure that relevant authorities were aware of the causes that they support. Malala stood up for her belief that women should receive an education. Even though she was shot, that did not hinder her from defending her ideals. Her bravery attracted international attention and she used it to her advantage to convince others about the importance of education. Greta Thunberg rallied with many teenagers to reproach grown-ups about their behavior and what they plan to do about global warming. She has received a lot of hate even from the president yet she still stands up for her beliefs.
Personally, I have always enjoyed expressing my views and changing people’s perception of issues. Though not all may agree with my stand, I feel fulfilled knowing that people support my view. In primary school, I had always wanted to be the class chairperson, and I was finally able to do so in primary 6 where I received the most votes.
Every year on teachers’ day, I would get volunteers to come to school early and prepare the surprise for teachers ready. Besides buying poppers and banners to decorate the class, we would also prepare food for the class party. My classmates volunteered to distract the teachers before they entered the classroom. When everything was ready, everyone popped the poppers and shouted “Happy teacher’s day”.
I enjoyed leading a group of students to accomplish something to appreciate our teachers. When a whole group of playful individuals set aside their differences to work together is not an easy feat. Through such experiences, I feel more comfortable leading a group of students rather than listening to the instruction given by others. I preferred being able to control the situation and thinking on my toes in order for everything to run as smoothly as possible with minimum slip-ups.
On foundress day in my school, I felt that it would be a great opportunity to do something different. Instead of giving household items and canned food, I proposed to my classmates that we could prepare cards with bible verses and handcrafted goodie bags instead. Many classmates of mine supported the idea and we then decided to chip in. Each person contributed two dollars and we collected about $80. With the money collected, I headed to the nearby value dollar with a few of my friends after school to buy essential items and some snacks. Each student had to customize two cards including a bible verse or an encouraging quote in their various mother tongue languages. After school, we went to distribute the bags to the blocks near our school. I enjoyed being able to lead my classmates and seeing the fruits of my efforts. I prefer standing out from the crowd as I feel that communicating with others gives me satisfaction and that I also played my part spearheading the project. Instead of going with the flow like many of my classmates, it is a good feeling to have people who support one’s decisions and take into consideration their opinions.
I feel strongly about being able to lead others and having opportunities to state my view towards issues or projects. Being able to have a say and communicating comes very naturally to me. Unlike others who prefer blending in and going with the flow, that is something I am unable to do as I feel the need to speak my mind no matter the situation.
