Essay topics:

Is discipline a necessary part of growing up? Discuss your views.

Discipline is a subject of controversy and is widely debated by many till this very day. Parents definitely want the best for their children. However, the differing views on how to discipline a child is one of the hardest parts of parenting. Discipline is necessary for the development and well-being of a child. It is vital for children to have the basic foundation of learning self-control. Discipline is also necessary for happiness and success in life. However, excessive rules and regulations implemented by parents from a young age may cause children to feel constantly wronged.

The development of a child is greatly enhanced by discipline. It plays a part in ensuring their happiness and well-being. When growing up, one is slowly developing from an immature to a mature individual. Initially, one will lack decisiveness and understanding as they are unsure of the outcome of their actions. However, once they do something wrong and get told off by a trusted adult, they tend to learn from their mistakes and will be unlikely to repeat it. When a child does something wrong, it is not about punishing them but about setting clear boundaries and consequences for breaking rules so that one learns how to discipline oneself. A child who has been taught to differentiate right from wrong will have a solid sense of what is negative and positive behavior will know when he has done something wrong. Individuals are more self-confident growing up as they know their opinions and feelings will be heard as their parents have tried to understand them as much as possible.

Self-control is learning how to retrain oneself from giving in to one’s desires, already knowing what the outcome will be. Without discipline, children lack self-control and are unsure on how to form relationships with others, learning to respect others or cooperating with peers. With self-control, one understands how to be patient and take time to understand the people around them without being hostile. To those around him, a child who is not disciplined will be unpleasant company, and a child without discipline may find it difficult to make friends. Individuals who do not understand the importance of discipline will not respect their parents or other authority figures as they were never expected to do so when growing up. They are unable to behave appropriately on various occasions. These individuals often lack proper social etiquette and skills which may make them unpleasant in the eyes of others.

With discipline, one can enjoy bliss and success. Disciplined forces one to be structured in their thinking. In addition, individuals can pick up skills like time management easily as they have the focus which keeps them on their toes. Growing up, they may become more successful as they are able to have control over their decisions and not procrastinate as much. Living with limits and respecting rules is essential for long-range life success, and children actually feel better knowing that their parents will help them to manage strong, unwelcome impulses which they are still too young to control on their own. When they are older it will become their second nature and are able to follow schedules and tight timelines with ease.

However, some parents may want to have the upper-hand when raising their children. They do not allow their children to make important choices. They definitely have the best intentions for their children but youngsters are not mature enough to understand the reason behind their actions. For example, there are “tiger moms” who constantly harp on their children's studies and get tuition for almost every subject as they want their child to have the best academic results and open more choices in the future. These parents are very involved in their children's life as they may choose their secondary school, subject combination and co-curricular activities. Individuals who are already struggling with their studies may not see their parents actions as a form of help but instead additional pressure. They may be angry and resent their parents for putting them through all the hardships. They are also unable to voice their thoughts as they may have no say in decision making. Such parents may regulate their child’s social media, outings with friends and deprive them of fun and enjoyment. They want their child to have the discipline to study long hours and not waste time on other unimportant things. Such parenting may cause their children to be deprived of a social life growing up which will affect their social skills. Excessive regulations and tight restrains on a child growing up will cause them to lack decisiveness or social skills.

In conclusion, discipline is definitely a vital part of growing up. Many good habits and foundations are formed because of good self-control and awareness. Parents need to proactively understand their children and develop trust. This gives youngsters security as they feel like their opinions matter and they have support. However, parents must not enforce such harsh regulations from a young age. They need to understand that different individuals mature at different paces and they may not always make the right decision if they try to control every aspect of their children's life. Parents must ensure that they maintain good relationships with their children and give them control to make the final decisions after giving their input or views.
