The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart represents the portion of owning and renting accommodation by the householders in England and Wales since 1918 to 2011. As is shown by the chart, the trend of couples who had their own property and the others who still rent it showed a significant alteration during this period.
Before 1971, most of marriage people tend to live in a rented space. Referring to this statement, I 1918, more than 75% of householders in England and Wales decided to rent accommodation. However, this percentage kept slightly declining until both owned and rented accommodation portion reached its balance in 1971.
On the other hand, after 1971, the desire of British couples has changed to be more prefer to purchased their own accommodation than rented it. The highest percentage of this group of people who picked to own their property was in 2001 at just under 70%. Even though the percentage fell for approximately 5% between 2001 and 2011, having own accommodation still became the preference for the householders.
