TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when the

The reading and lecture both discuss the solution of preventing the birds from getting hurt from the architecture glass. While the reading provides three solutions to protect the birds from the art glass, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.

Firstly, the reading states that we should make the architecture glass transparent from one side and none transparent from the other side, so we can prevent the birds from hitting the glass. On the other hand, the professor refutes this idea by saying that the one way transparent glass has a problem which is the glass works as a mirror. In addition, this mirror will be bad as regular glass. This is because the birds can not understand that. Furthermore, this mirror will reflect the trees and sky pictures. So, many birds will get hurt.

In addition, the article avers that the architectures should make colorful painting to give chance for birds to avoid the glass. However, the professor question this notion by pointing out that the colorful glass has a problem like regular glass. This is because people inside can see outside, but birds will think that glass has an open hall and they can go through them. Moreover, the painting glass should be extremely small. Consequently, it will get it dark for people inside.

Finally, the reading mentions that we might have magnetic field to help birds get away from glass through their natural magnetic navigation ability. Nevertheless, the professor rejects this idea by explaining that birds have earth navigation ability, but they use this ability for long distance. For example, birds use magnetic ability to navigate form cold country to warm country in winter season. On the other hand, birds can not use this ability to navigate in small city or for short trip. In fact, they use their eyes to navigate inside the cities. So, magnetic field ability does not have this much effect in small areas.
