According to the reading, using wave-energy facilities to generate energy is highly promising because of three reasons: they are highly stable and reliable source of energy, they are not harmful to environment, and they are not visually interrupting. However, the lecturer poses an opposing view: the optimistic view upon the wave farms might even be a mere illusion.
First of all, the stability of the energy generator is questionable. The reading claims that it is easy to predict the frequency and intensity of wave as the weather of costal areas, where wave farms are located, is relatively stable. However, as the wave-energy facility requires newly developed, high-end technology to be placed in a harsh environment, the facilities often struggle with malfunctioning. Because of that, the energy supply of the wave farms fluctuates.
Secondly, the wave-energy facility possesses possible harm to the environment. Unlike the reading saying that there is risk of contamination, floats of the facility actually contains harmful chemical called lubricant. The chemical enables turbine or other parts to move smoothly, but it is highly toxic and have adverse effect on environment when the leakage occurs.
In addition, wave farms are visually unappealing. Although the reading claims that the converters are small and usually not visible, in fact, they are colored with bright colors in order to be detected easily. Furthermore, there are lots of floats installed close to the shore, which makes it easy for visitors to spot the facilities.
