The reading passage discusses the decline of Sea otter in the Alaskan coast and the most likely cause can be better explained by the hypothesis of pollution. However, the speaker refutes the hypothesis theory and asserts the attacks by predators theory is well explained.
Firstly, the passage says water samples of the Alaskan coast revealed oil rigs and chemicals from industries which might have reduced the sea otter's resistance thus resulting them to die. However, the professor says that there were no dead bodies of the animals floating on the water surface because predators had eaten those animals.
Secondly, the passage claims entire ecosystem was disturbed due to the pollution and hence there was a decline in other sea animals like Seals and Sea lions but not Orca since it feeds on large animals like whales. However, the professor disagrees. She says whales disappeared due to human hunting and hence Orcas must have changed the diet to survive and hence the decline in all animals was observed.
Thirdly, the passage claims that an uneven pattern of animals decline was due to environmental factors and uneven distribution of chemicals and oil by ocean currents. On the contrary, the professor says that the predators of sea otter can eat Sea otters only if they have enough access to the location. Thus, there were no reports of sea otters decline in shallow and rocky areas because the predators cannot access those areas.
