A salty inland lake located in California, the level of salt in the Salton Sea has been increasing in recent decades. As a result, it would be dangerous for fish and bird populations, as the passage puts it. It provides three suggestions to solve this problem. The lecturer, on the other hand, asserts that these suggestions are not realistic and practical and repudiates all the author's explanations by three concrete pieces of evidence.
First, the reading goes on to mention that desalination facilities could extract the salt from the lake's water, and salt-free water would be returned to the lake. Moreover, the professor rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that whether solid materials would be left after water evaporation could cause some serious health problems. She points out that such materials may include some toxic materials as well as salt. If the wind blows away the toxic material into the air, it would cause significant problems for local people.
Second, that introducing Pacific Ocean's water being 20 percent less salty than water in the lake can decrease the salinity of the lake's water, based on what the passage claims, is refuted by the professor. She explains that although dilution of lake's water may be an efficient solution, it would cost a lot since the distance between the Pacific Ocean and the lake is 100 kilometres, so building canals or pipelines for such a long distance may be out of the budget of the government.
Third, the passage states that thanks to constructing walls in order to divide the lake into different parts, the salinity of main part of the lake would be declined, whereas the professor casts serious doubt on this point of view by saying that there are lots of geological events which are occurred in the lake such as earthquake. If an earthquake happens, the wall would be destroyed, hence high salinity water would back to low salinity water.
