The chart below shows the number of men and women in further education in Britain in three periods and whether they were studying full-time or part-time. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
The given chart illustrates how many British men and women were pursuing full-time or part-time education from 1970 to 1991.
Overall, it is clear from the graph that an increasing trend is seen for part-time education among females while a decreasing trend is observed in male counterparts. However, full-time education saw a gradual rise in men and a significant rise in women. A remarkable difference is seen among males and females choosing part-time and full-time studies. At any given point of time, part-time was seen to be more popular than full-time.
On the one hand, males showed a decline in studying part-time subjects. In 1970, one million men were involved, that decreased to around 840 thousand in 1980. In 1990, it slightly increased to 850 thousand. Full-time education was on a steady rise in males from 100 thousand in 1971 to about 220 thousand in 1991.
On the other hand, in females, a gradual rise was noted in part-time education. In 1970, it was 700 thousand, that increased to 1.1 million in 1991. Approximately 90 thousand women studied full-time in 1971, that slowly rose to 220 thousand in 1991.
