The line graph illustrates the changes in price of different food product groups from 1978 to 2009.
It is noticeable that despite fluctuations, the prices increased for all three groups over the period shown. However, only the increase in the prices for fresh fruits and vegetables was higher than the consumer-price index.
All the lines on the graph have the same starting figures. The consumer-price index rose steadily from about 70 in 1979 to just over 200 at the end of the period. Likewise, the price changes for sugar and sweets and carbonated drinks followed the same pattern. After minor fluctuations, the changes in prices for these two food groups went up to 200 and 150 respectively over the 31-year period. However, these figures were consistently lower than the consumer-price index.
By contrast, fresh fruits and vegetable was the only group whose prices rose sharply, particularly after 1985. From the same figure at the start of the period, the prices were always higher than the consumer-price index until 2009, finishing at around 330 in 2009.
