The world's forests are facing increasing pressure which, if unchecked, will threaten the health of many industries, economies, nations, and lives. The development of an international fund to help developing countries implement useful conservation techniques in forest protection is the best way to protect the world's forests and hopefully reverse negative trends that imperil our forests.
The reading and the lecture are both about the increasing pressure on forests around the world and that this affects many at an economic level and even people lives. The author of the reading feels this can to be stopped by the creation of an international fund to financial different solutions in developmental countries. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that the problem is real but the solutions presented in the reading are promoting deforestation instead.
To begin with, the author argues that the protection of the forest agriculture is the better way to avoid that this kind of land become part of industries. The article mentions that giving funds to farmers will persuade them to sell their properties. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that agriculture is bad because it is the most destructive force to forest. Additionally, he says that in agriculture it is use pesticides that end up in water pollution and it is not good for the environment.
Secondly, the writer suggests that the fund should be given to developing economies. In the article, it is said that are villages and tribal residents who should receive the found. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that are these particular people the forest owners, even from the government and for that they are inadequate to decide what to do with the funds given. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that it would be impossible the control of the money.
Finally, the author posits that this fund could help governments and people to create protected areas. Moreover, it is stated in the article that this protect biodiversity and species from extinction. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that people would choose to plant trees with commercial purpose. He notes that this would not help biodiversity.
