In the lecture, the professor makes series of points that cast doubt on all the arguments presented in the reading passage about reasons to suspect that the story of the burning mirror is just a myth and the Greeks of Syracuse never really built such a device. Also, he says that there is an experiment set to ensure the possibility that this device is a real weapon.
The first area of debate is that the ancient Greeks had been not talent enough to make this device which needs large pieces of copper. The professor does not believe that Greeks need such large pieces to make the frame for the device as the reading suggested. In fact, they can use small pieces of mirror and stick with each other. In addition, the mathematicians can help them with the measuring of the device and set up correctly. As a result, this reason is not convincing enough to consider this device is just a myth.
The second controversial issue is that the wood needs so long to burn. The speaker contradicts that the Greeks did not use only wood in this device. They used another material called pitch to stick the woods together. Furthermore, this material which burned in seconds. Consequently, the procedure does not take so long to make it done.
The final area of dispute is that a burning mirror should have a flaming arrow, which was a common way of setting the ships on fire, but this device did not have it. The lecturer opposes that this device does not have this flaming arrow as the reading stated. Moreover, this kind of tools has hiding arrows that no one can notice. Besides, these hiding arrows make the weapon more surprising to the enemy.
