The chart illustrates the amount of energy being used in the United States from 1980 to 2008, and it was predicted for until 2030, based on a finding that was reported in 2008.
Overall, fossil fuels were the most consumed sources of energy in the country, with oil having the highest usage, followed by coal and natural gas. All three fossil fuels were expected to rise by 2030. Clean energy was the least used sources of energy but it was expected to rise at a slower rate by 2030.
According to the finding, petrol and oil had been dominating the energy shares in the United States with 35 quadrillion units being consumed in 1980. Although this energy fuel experienced ups and downs, it gradually increased up to approximately 48 quadrillions by 2030. In the early '80s, coal consumption was catching up against natural gas to become the second most consumed energy fuel, starting from more than 15 quadrillions in 1980. It has then been rising steadily over the period and was projected to rise double by 2030. The consumption of natural gas had fluctuated since the '80s until it reached about 25 quadrillions in the 2010s. This trend remains constant at the same rate until 2030.
Alternative energy sources are the least consumed fuels in the country. Less than five quadrillion units of each of these fuels were being used in 1980. Nuclear energy started to increase gradually but slowly and it was expected to increase up to 8 quadrillions by 2030, while solar is also increasing despite few fluctuations and approximately six quadrillions of solar consumption was predicted for 2030. Among all the energy fuel usage in the US, hydropower was being consumed the least as from 2010 until 2030, it remains consistent at the same figure as for 1980.
