The graphs below show the age structure of a European country from 1901 to 1981 and a prediction for 2021
The pie charts provide population figures and proportions of 3 age groups in a European country every 40 years between 1901 and 1981. A projection for 2021 is also included.
Over 8 decades from 1901, the general trend of an aging population was evident, which is expected to continue until 2021. Also, population figures are shown to have increased steadily and resume in the examined period.
In 1901, the vast majority of the population was aged less than 65 years of age, while those above 65 and 85 constituted only 5% in total. The same configuration was seen 40 years later, even though the population increased by almost a half to over 52 million people.
The year 1981 recorded a similar increase of 15 million people. However, in this year, despite being mostly represented by those below 65 (83%), the population was shown to age markedly. The figure for the above-85 group grew four times while that for those aged between 65 and 85 more than tripled to reach 13%. It is projected that in 2021, both groups will increase by 2%, leaving the youngest group occupying slightly less than 80%. The country is also anticipated to accommodate nearly 88 million people, maintaining the population growth over the fourty year interval.
