Summarize the points made in the lecture
The reading and the lecture are both about Altruism behaviour among living beings. Whereas the author of the reading states that people sacrificing things, in other words who perform altruistic acts never profit from the sacrifice, the lecturer suggest that people do get benefitted from the same. The lecturer cast doubts on the main points of the reading by stating following two examples.
First of all, according to reading, in the first example where a human makes donations of kidney or other organs, little reward is gained by the one performing the donation. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She argues that, by making donations, one receives respect and appreciation from the society. Furthermore, she mentions that such act increases sense of self- worth. According to her, these non material rewards are more valuable.
In the second example of Meerkat, the reading states that the sentinels who are standing guards and look for predators risk their life whereas other meerkats hunt and eat food. Thus sentinels perform altruistic act. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument . She thinks that sentinels are more likely to escape after giving an alarm. Since, they first get to know about predators they are likely to be safe. On the other hand, those who scatter for food are less protected.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about altruism, the two main examples of humans and Meerkats, made in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer
