The bar chart illustrates the proportion of residences owned and rented accommodation of people in the UK and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, we can see that there were opposite trends between rented and owned households over the period, and there was a bump between those types.
In 1918, just above 20% of households were bought by British and Wales. In contrast, nearly 80% of the accommodations were hired. The percentage of households owning was increasing slightly in the next period, then remaining steadily before went up to 50% in 1971. On the other hand, the amount of renting households decreased in 1939 and remain unchanged in the year of 1953. The number was continuing dropped significantly and had met the percentage of households in owned.
In addition, the trend of households in rented had been going down dramatically to around 31% in 2001, before rising to approximately 35% at the end of the period. Conversely, the proportion of accommodations owning reached a peak of 69% in 2001, before sank by 4% in 2011.
