Nations should suspend government funding for the arts when significant numbers of their citizens are hungry or unemployed.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
Arts is an inherent part of any society, every country, civilization has experienced arts playing a vital role in society. Arts has put countries on the world map example Italy is famous for its rich art history, it has given role models such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michael Angelo etc. to the society and have provided individual with income. The prompt recommends that a nation whose citizens are hungry and unemployed should suspend the government funding for arts. Such a recommendation goes to the extreme when it calls out for the funding to be suspended and should require qualification for following reasons.
Firstly, every country has art galleries, museums, theatres, arts school where today numerous people work and earn their bread and butter. For example, Seattle arts museum today has over 100 plus staff which works their full time. There are people who are part of maintenance team, art experts for answering questions from the visitors, accountant managing the accounts of the museum and several other people executing other tasks as part of their full-time job. Also, not to forget the artists who display their work in the gallery of the museum. These displays of their work results in sale of the work and income for the artist. Suspending the funding for arts will impact the workers who are employed in these institutions as less or no funding might ask for head count reduction. If such a situation arises then the prompt recommendation will in fact exacerbate the existing condition of unemployment.
Secondly, government of a nation funds numerous activities and fields such as arts, sport, wildlife preservation. Also, there are subsidies provided to farmers, people for certain areas of the country etc. To put in other words, it is not that government funding is done only for arts but for other sectors as well. It is very important to understand how will suspending the funding for the arts help improve the existing situation of unemployment and lack of food for the citizens. It is crucial to get answer to the question, “will suspending the art funding be enough to tackle the existing problem?” On the contrary, by continuing to fund arts and allowing it to flourish might lead to employment generation and can ameliorate the unemployment problem. With arts flourishing the artists will get the confidence to be bold and try new things which might result in improved employment opportunities for citizens of the nation. Consider a film director who has been planning to direct a movie which involves high technology graphic and need for visual graphics, he was unable to direct such a movie earlier as the funds were not there but with government funding, he is now willing to make such a movie. This movie will create job for people who have visual graphic and high technology graphic skills. Similarly, other ventures in art might create job opportunities provided the funding continues. these job opportunities ultimately will result in improving the hunger problem.
Finally, one may say if not suspension of the funding then a reduction such as 5 or 10% from the existing funding can be used in other programs developed to fight the existing condition of unemployment and hunger. By following such an approach, a balance can struck there by not impacting the arts and at the same time able to take some money and divert it to other programs solely focused on improving the ongoing issue.
