This topic raises the most vacillating issue of whether the government should provide free education at both college and university levels to all the students. Indisputably, if the government do so it increases the financial burden on it's shoulders. Neverthless, providing scholarships to the merit students has not been implemented to the fullest due to lack of funds to the government. Now if the governmant announces the free education to all the students then it only increases the burden on citizens of country in some or other form. Thus, I generally disagree with the proposal of free education to all at college and university and would argue that it should be limited to particular class of students who are merit, poor.
First of all, college and university education have become so expensive to afford. I would like to point out that many private and even public universities charge a way more than what an average student can afford. To illustrate this let us look the example of IITs in India where struggle alot to get into and even asked to pay more than 2 Lakh Rupees per annum. Many private colleges charge more than 10 Lakhs Rupees for entire four years of engineering. While there may be students who can afford such a high fee, many cannot. In this circumstance, obviously there is a need from government to such students. Consequently, it is pretty obvious that free education should be limited to students who cannot afford their education.
Furthermore, the government is struggling to provide fee reimbursement to the engineering students in India though this scheme covers only limited students, then it is dubitable how would it succed to provide free education to every student. Specifically, one of my senior from our college has got to pay last 2 years of his engineering fee to get his certificates as the government failed to pay the reimbursement in time. This clearly depicts the struggle facing by the government. Both common sense and personal experience have told us that free education to all is definitely not so helpful. Hence, all the evidences above demonstrates that free education must be limited and only then it will be effective.
Admittedly, free education to all is not good for both government and students too. This is true especially when it comes to the quality of education which gets detorriated when it is free. In addition, students put in some real efforts when they know how much does it actually costs to them. So giving it away for free may led to the lack of seriousness in the studies. However, the above argument does not constitute a sufficient support to claim that free education to all. Because of all these reasons free education to all is not credulous.
In conclusion, although the free education to all is a great idea to follow on, it is not affordable. So keeping it limited to only to a class of poor and merit students it can be implemented effectively.
