methods of desalination of lake's water
The presence of higher levels of salts in the lake's water is harmful to the flora and fauna visiting the particular lake, eventually becoming vulnerable species. The reading is about the methods used to decrease salinity in the lake's water. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author and explains the reasons as following.
To begin with, the reading mentions that salinity can be decreased by desalinating the lake's water by heating water so that it leaves solid materials behind, like salt. The professor refutes this point and states that leaving behind materials will have a serious downside by causing health-related complications to people. For instance, selenium or any other chemicals leaving into the air which people breathe are harmful. From this, he proves that it is not a better solution for desalination.
Furthermore, the author mentions that by diluting the salinity of the lake's water by flowing ocean water into the lake through pipelines and canals. However, the tutor challenges by stating that the local government has not enough payable resources for such pipelines and canals as there are some thousands of miles away from the lake. In addition, he mentions that it is not that easy to create pipelines for thousands of miles. This clearly illustrates this idea is not worthful.
Finally, the writer states that constructing walls and dividing the lake into several components will be a better idea to remove salt from the lake. On the other hand, the speaker mentions that constructing walls wouldn't last long. For example, there are frequent disturbances under the lake's water such as earthquakes which will destroy the wall and mixes separated water into one. This shows it isn't a long-lasting idea that doesn't deserve success.
