The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph compares the percentage of the elderly between the age of 65 and over in Japan, Sweden and USA over a century from 1940.
Overall, there is an obvious upward trend in the percentage of people aged 65 and over in both three countries during the period shown. From the country at the bottom of all, Japan is expected to reach the highest rank in terms of elderly proportion in the year 2040.
During the first 40-year period, USA experienced a steady rise in the percentage of elderly population, maintaining its lead in 1980. The figure for Sweden is similarly on the way up, with a rise of approximately 7% in 1940 to around 14% in the year 1980. By contrast, Japan's figure fell slightly to roughly 3% in 1960 and remained constant for at at 25 following years.
Falling a little bit at the end of the 1990s, Sweden turned its figure around to almost 20% in 2010, surpassing USA's figure by roughly 6%. While the former suffered a dip again in the next 10 years before bouncing back, the latter continued to rise. Both are predicted to pick theirs proportion up to around 25% and 23% respectively in 2040. Meanwhile in Japan, after a gradual increase between 1990 and 2030, it is forecast that the figure will rocket to approximately 27% at the end of the period.
