The reading and the lecture are both about Torreya taxifolia, which is an evergreen tree that started to die out, and soon will become extinct. the reading provides three solutions to address the decline of this tree, on the other hand, the lecture casts doubt on these solutions for the following reasons:
First, the author suggest to reestablish the tree in the same location, where it thrived for years. however, the lecturer mentions that this is unlikely to be successful because of the climate change and global warming, which, over all increased the temperature of the area and made it dry.
Secondly the author mention moving the tree to a new cooler location in contrast the lecturer believes this so called assisted migration can cause harm to other trees, she elaborates on this by giving an example of The Black Locust tree which was one moved to another location started killing other endangered trees.
Finally, the author claim that Torreya can be preserved in research center in closely monitored environment. on the other hand, the lecturer thinks that in the research centers, the tree will not survive in such environment. she argues that the in order for the tree to resist illness it need develop to maturity and allow the process of natural selection.
